Cavalier Women's Tennis Tops Brown 6-1

CHARLOTTESVILLE - The No. 31 ranked Virginia women's tennis team won its fourth consecutive match, defeating No. 67 Brown 6-1 Sunday at the Boar's Head Sports Club. For the Cavaliers, it was their second win over a ranked opponent this season.

Virginia (5-1) jumped out to a 1-0 lead after sweeping the doubles matches. The team of Lauren Bruch (Lake Forest, Ill.) and Mariko Fritz-Krockow (Fairfax, Va.) won at No. 1 before Kristen James (Clifton, Va.) and Shannon Stough (Hot Springs, Ark.) clinched the point with their win at No. 2. Kyle Montgomery (Charlottesville, Va.) and Caroline Hammond (Williamsburg, Va.) closed out doubles play with a win at No. 3.

In singles action, the Cavaliers came out quickly and won the first four matches off the court. James and Fritz-Krockow posted wins at No. 3 and No. 1 before Dora Bechliwanis's (Etobicoke, Ont.) win at No. 4 clinched the match. Stough's win at No. 6 increased the Cavalier advantage to 5-0. After Brown had won at No. 2, Marta Bechliwanis (Etobicoke, Ont.) closed out the match with a win at No. 5 to make the final score 6-1.

Virginia returns to action next weekend as they visit a pair of Ivy League foes. The Cavaliers will travel to Princeton on Saturday at Penn on Sunday.
