CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Proving the third time is the charm, the University of
Virginia women's tennis team defeated Clemson 6-3 this afternoon at the
Sheridan Snyder Tennis Center. For the third match in a row, the Cavaliers
were within one point of a victory heading into the doubles competition.
The two previous matches saw Virginia hold a 4-2 lead at the start of
doubles, but lost to Richmond and Georgia Tech. Today, however, was a
different story as Virginia took two of three doubles matches to clinch the
victory.
The win improves the Cavaliers' record to 10-5 overall and 1-2 in the ACC.
Clemson falls to 4-12 this season and 0-5 in the ACC. The win is Virginia's
second in a row over the Tigers and just the third ever in the 21-year
history of the rivalry.
Senior Stacy Gingold continued her resurgence for the Cavaliers by
defeating Kate-Maree Mair at #2 6-1, 6-2 for her second win in a row.
Freshman Amy O'Donnell was victorious at #3 with a 6-2, 2-6, 6-2 win over
Clemson's Catherine Galvin. Sophomores Christie Schweer at #5 and Kelly
Weaver at #6 also won in straight sets for Virginia.
Virginia wasted little time taking the remaining drama from the match as
Schweer and Leslie Cook were first off following an 8-4 win over Cecilia
Hincapie and Cinny Clausen at #2 doubles. O'Donnell and Weaver were also
victorious at #3 doubles for Virginia.
The Cavaliers return to action at home at 2:30 p.m. against Maryland on
Wednesday.
