DURHAM, NC - The University of Virginia women's tennis team scored two upsets of nationally ranked individuals, but it wasn't enough to earn a win as the No. 32 Cavaliers fell 6-1 Sunday at No. 4 Duke. The loss drops the Cavaliers' record to 11-8 on the season, 1-4 in the ACC.

The Cavaliers came out strong and nearly took the doubles point. The team of Kristen James (Clifton, Va.) and Lori Stern (Ojai, Calif.) posted an upset of the nation's No. 4 ranked doubles team of Amanda Johnson and Julie DeRoo at No. 2 doubles. However, the Cavaliers could not pull out wins at either No. 1 or No. 3 doubles.

The Blue Devils would then take five of the six matches for the 6-1 win. The lone Cavalier win came at No. 3 singles where James posted another upset, defeating No. 81 ranked Julie DeRoo in three sets.

"We came out strong and nearly got the doubles point," stated Virginia head coach Phil Rogers. "Unfortunately we followed that with a slow start in singles. We played well today and this match was a few points away from being a 4-3 match. We are optimistic about our upcoming home matches next week."

The Cavaliers return home to host Maryland on Wednesday. Time of the match at the Snyder Tennis Center is 2:30 pm.
