COLLEGE PARK, Md. -
The No. 25 ranked Virginia women's tennis team suffered a 4-3 loss to No. 34 Maryland in its regular season finale Saturday afternoon at the Tennis Center of College Park. The loss drops the Cavaliers record to 12-8 on the season, 6-5 in the ACC.
The Terrapins (12-10, 5-6) opened the match by taking the doubles point. Lara Alexander (London, England) and Rachel DelPriore (Williamsville, N.Y.) topped Neda Mihneva and Julia Graca at No. 3 doubles, but Maryland won at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles to secure the point.
In singles, the Cavaliers won three matches in straight sets, but it wasn't enough as the Terrapins won the other three contests to win the dual match. Lori Stern (Ojai, Calif.) topped Veronika Subertova 6-3, 6-1 at No. 3 singles. Lindsey Pereira (Arlington, Texas) also won in straight sets for Virginia, defeating Jennifer Dent 6-2, 6-4 at the No. 4 position. Caroline Hammond (Williamsburg, Va.) downed Mihneva 6-0, 6-3 at No. 6 singles.
"Give a lot of credit to Maryland," said Virginia assistant coach Troy Porco. "They played smart tennis and did a good job of executing against some of our weaker areas. Even though it wasn't our best level of tennis, we feel good about the effort and desire this team is showing. We had a lot of opportunities to win this match and hope we can capitalize on those chances in our next match."
The Cavaliers will travel to Cary, N.C. for the ACC Tournament next week. Play begins at the Cary Tennis Center on Thursday.
