WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- The 52nd-ranked University of Virginia
women's tennis team lost to second-ranked Wake Forest 8-0 Sunday afternoon,
April 16 at the Leighton Tennis Stadium in Winston-Salem, N.C. With the
loss, the Cavaliers fall to 13-9 overall and 3-5 in the Atlantic Coast
Conference. Wake Forest improves to 18-1 overall and 8-0 in the ACC.
The Demon Deacons won all six singles matches in straight sets to
clinch the win. Wake Forest also won a pair of doubles matches to make the
final score 8-0.
At #1 singles, UVa second-year Amy O'Donnell (Mahwah, N.J./Mahwah),
who earned a No. 99 ranking this week, fell to No. 5 Adria Engel 6-2, 6-3.
Virginia third-year Christie Schweer (Houston, Texas/Memorial) lost to No.
19 Bea Bielik 6-1, 6-1 at #2, while first-year Henriette Williams (Raleigh,
N.C./Broughton) dropped a 6-1, 6-4 decision to No. 40 Janet Bergman at #3.
UVa third-year Leslie Cook (Boynton Beach, Fla./Lake Worth Christian) lost
to Maren Haus 6-0, 6-0 at #4 singles. At #5, Virginia first-year Jennifer
Tuchband (Millburn, N.J./Millburn) lost a hard-fought 6-4, 7-5 match to No.
85 Jackie Houston. Third-year Kelly Weaver (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston) fell
6-2, 6-2 to Annemarie Milton at #6 singles.
In doubles play, Williams and Schweer lost to Bielik and Bergman
8-3 at #1. Wake Forest won the #3 doubles match by default and the #2
doubles match was not played.
Virginia returns to action Thursday through Sunday, April 20-23
when it competes in the ACC Tournament at the Racquet Club of the South in
Norcross, Georgia.
