Two Women's Tennis Players Pick Up Season-Opening Victories

RALEIGH, N.C. - Virginia third year Kelly Weaver (Kingston, N.Y./Kingston) and second year Jana Liskovcova (South Easton, Mass./Mansfield) both won their season-opening tennis matches in first round action at the 1999 Wolfpack Invitational at North Carolina State University on Friday. In addition to Virginia, players from N.C. State, Davidson, Appalachian State, UNC-Greensboro, and Georgia State are participating in the invitational. The three-day tournament will conclude on Sunday, September 19.

In Flight C Singles, Weaver defeated UNC-Greensboro's Amanda Eutzler 7-5, 6-2, while Liskovcova was victorious over UNC-Greensboro's Carolina Covington 6-4, 6-1. Third-year Christie Schweer (Houston, Texas/Memorial) was the lone Cavalier to fall as she lost 6-1, 6-1 to Forbes Thompson of Davidson in Flight A Singles competition.

Virginia had five players receive first round byes. Second year Amy O'Donnell (Mahwah, N.J./Mahwah) received a bye in Flight A Singles, while third year Leslie Cook (Boynton Beach, Fla./Lake Worth Christian) and first year Henriette Williams (Millburn, N.J./Millburn) were given byes in Flight B competition. In Flight C Singles, first year Jennifer Tuchband (Raleigh, N.C./Broughton) received a bye, as did second year Christine Kim (McLean, Va./Bishop Ireton) in Flight D Singles.

The Cavaliers will also have four doubles teams competing in two flights. Cook and Schweer, ranked 48th in the ITA Preseason Rankings, along with Kim and O'Donnell, will compete in Flight A Doubles. In Flight B Doubles, Weaver and Tuchband will form one team, while Williams and Liskovcova will form the final doubles pair.
