Cavaliers Advance To Finals Of ITA Atlantic Regional

LYNCHBURG, Va. – Senior Julia Elbaba (Oyster Bay, N.Y.) headlined a successful day for the Virginia women’s  tennis team at the ITA Atlantic Regional. Elbaba advanced to the singles final with a pair of wins on Sunday, while both Cavalier doubles teams advanced to  Monday’s final.

Elbaba picked up two wins on Sunday, defeating Elena Cerezo-Codina of Virginia Tech by a score of 6-0, 6-2 in her first match of the afternoon before defeating teammate Skylar Morton (Bethesda, Md.) in the second match. Elbaba bested Morton by a score of 6-1, 6-3.

Morton advanced to the semifinals by virtue of a 6-1, 6-3 win over fourth-seeded player Francesca Fusinato of Virginia Tech to set up the match against Elbaba.

Junior Victoria Olivarez (Virginia Beach, Va.) fell to Caroline Daxhelet of Virginia Tech in three sets by a score of 2-6, 6-2, 6-2. Daxhelet was seeded 13th in the tournament field.

In the doubles draw, the pairing of Elbaba and Morton defeated the team of Nakagawa and Saperstein from Pittsburgh by a score of 7-6 (1), 6-2 to advance to the finals. The Virginia pairing of Danielle Collins (St. Petersburg, Fla.) and Meghan Kelley (Falmouth, Me.) defeated the pairing of Ogungbesan and Washington from Pittsburgh 6-4, 6-4 to advance to the finals.

Elbaba will hit the court at 10 a.m. on Monday to play for the championship and a berth in the ITA National Indoors, while the two Cavalier squads in doubles are slated to face each other at 12 p.m. with a berth in the ITA National Indoors on the line.
