CHARLOTTESVILLE - The Virginia women's tennis team went 5-1 in singles and 3-0 in doubles during Saturday (Oct. 19) action at the ITA Atlantic Regional Championships at Snyder Tennis Center.
In singles, No. 2 seed Danielle Collins (St. Petersburg, Fla.), No. 3 seed Stephanie Nauta (Galveston, Texas), No. 9 seed Rachel Pierson (Princeton, N.J.), No. 10 seed Li Xi (Kunming, China) and freshman Marie Faure (Toulouse, France) each posted wins in the round of 64. Collins beat George Washington's Leah Pascarella 6-3, 6-0. Nauta beat Liberty's Belen Rivera 6-1, 6-2 and Pierson beat Richmond's Melissa Kandinata 6-1, 6-2. Xi defeated West Virginia's Kaja Mrgole 6-4, 6-2 and Faure beat Georgetown's Sophie Panarese 6-4, 6-1.
Virginia went 3-0 in doubles, advancing three tandems to the round of 16. No. 2 seed Julia Elbaba (Oyster Bay, N.Y.) and Pierson defeated Virginia Tech's Tea Ivanovic and Sansitha Nanadakumar, 8-5. No. 12 seed Maci Epstein (Winter Park, Fla.) and Caryssa Peretz (Cherry Hill, N.J.) beat Georgetown's Kelly Comolli and Madeline Jaeger, 8-3. Xi and Faure defeated Pitt's Jocelyn Lu and Taylor Washington, 8-2.
Action continues Sunday at 9:30 a.m.
A total of 88 singles players and 48 doubles pairs from 25 teams are facing off as individuals in singles and doubles from Oct. 18-22. This is one of 24 USTA/ITA Regional Championships for NCAA Division I men and women taking place in October at campuses throughout the country. The singles and doubles champions will advance to the 2013 USTA/ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, taking place November 7-10, at the indoor facilities at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, located in Flushing, N.Y.
