CHARLOTTESVILLE - The Virginia women's tennis team had four singles players and three doubles teams advance to the quarterfinals to highlight Sunday (Oct. 20) action at the ITA Atlantic Regional at Snyder Tennis Center.
Virginia's Danielle Collins (St. Petersburg, Fla.), Rachel Pierson (Princeton, N.J.), Li Xi (Kunming, China) and Marie Faure (Toulouse, France) each posted a pair of wins to advance to the quarterfinals. No. 2 seed Collins beat West Virginia's Vivian Tsui 6-1, 6-1 and VCU's Yukako Noi 6-0, 7-5. No. 9 seed Pierson defeated St. Joe's Aurora Davis 6-4, 6-0 and George Washington's Lana Robins 6-3, 6-1.
No. 10 seed Xi ousted Maryland's Alexandra Stanova 6-1, 6-3 and Old Dominion's Nika Khmolovska 6-2, 6-4. Faure beat Virginia Tech's Ilinca Stoica 6-4, 6-2 and William & Mary's Nabila Farah 6-4, 6-1.
Collins will play Faure in the quarterfinals tomorrow, while Xi battles William & Mary's Maria Belaya and Pierson plays William & Mary's Jeltje Loomans.
In doubles, Virginia went 3-0 for the second straight day. No. 2 seed Julia Elbaba (Oyster Bay, N.Y.) and Pierson defeated Maryland's Nataliya and Olga Bredikhina, 8-0. No. 12 seed Maci Epstein (Winter Park, Fla.) and Caryssa Peretz (Cherry Hill, N.J.) defeated Liberty's Valerie Thong and Brittany Yang, 8-1. Xi and Faure defeated Old Dominion's Ingrid Vojcinakova and Marijana Novakovic, 8-1.
Action continues on Monday beginning at 10 a.m.
A total of 88 singles players and 48 doubles pairs from 25 teams are facing off as individuals in singles and doubles from Oct. 18-22. This is one of 24 USTA/ITA Regional Championships for NCAA Division I men and women taking place in October at campuses throughout the country. The singles and doubles champions will advance to the 2013 USTA/ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships, taking place November 7-10, at the indoor facilities at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, located in Flushing, N.Y.
