Women's Tennis Begins Play at UVa Winter Classic


CHARLOTTESVILLE - The Virginia women's tennis team opened its 2012 spring schedule on Saturday as play began at seventh annual UVa Winter Invitational at the Boyd Tinsley Courts at the Boar's Head Sports Club. The Cavaliers went 3-3 in singles and 1-2 in doubles on the opening day as they played nine matches against Utah.

Sunday's play will now start at 10 a.m. The Cavaliers will play on Monday beginning at 10:30 a.m. Admission is free.

In singles, Erin Vierra (Norwell, Mass) rallied for a 1-6, 6-0, 6-1 win over Natasha Smith in Flight D. Maria Fuccillo (Rockville, Md.) and Molly O'Koniewski (Hilton Head Island, S.C.) won in straight sets in Flight E and Flight F respectively. The doubles team of O'Koniewski and Caryssa Peretz (Cherry Hill, N.J.) won their opener in Flight C.

Out west at the National College Tennis Classic in Palm Springs, Virginia had a strong second day. Emily Fraser (Rye, N.Y.), ranked No. 29 nationally, defeated No. 119 Noel Scott of Texas 6-4, 7-5 in the quarterfinals and No. 47 Ariel Ellis of Texas 6-4, 6-2 in the semifinals. Li Xi (Kunming, China) upset No. 31 Ellen Tsay of Stanford 7-6, 6-1 in the quarterfinals before falling in the semifinals to No. 42 Danielle Lao of USC, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3. In doubles, Fraser and Xi reached the semifinals with a 9-8 quarterfinal win over Krista Damico and Alex Martin of Texas.

Virginia opens the dual match season on Feb. 21 as it faces No. 18 Tennessee at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, N.Y.
