Play Begins at UVa Winter Invitational

CHARLOTTESVILLE The Virginia women’s tennis team opened the spring portion of its schedule Friday as the third annual UVa Winter Invitational began at the Boyd Tinsley Courts at the Boar’s Head Sports Club. The three-day tournament runs through Sunday.

On Friday, the Cavaliers had a strong performance in doubles. The team of Jennifer Stevens (Miami, Fla.) and Amanda Rales (Bethesda, Md.) topped the 30th ranked team of Mykala Hedberg and Staten Spencer of LSU, 8-0, in Flight B. In Flight A, the Virginia team of Maggie Yahner (Las Vegas, Nev.) and Lindsey Pereira (Arlington, Texas) defeated the LSU team of Megan Falcon and Hannah Robinson, 9-8.

In singles, Virginia had a singles win by Yahner, who defeated Robinson 6-1, 6-4 in Flight D.

Play on Saturday begins at 10 a.m. Sunday’s play will begin at 9 a.m. Admission is free.
