CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Junior Cassie Mercer (Huntington, W.V.) of the Virginia (1-0, 1-0 ACC) women’s tennis team has been named the ACC Player of the Week, the league office announced on Tuesday (Jan. 24).
Mercer, who is playing at No. 1 singles for the Cavaliers, posted a straight-set victory over the Eagles’ top player in Asiya Dair. Mercer defeated Dair, who is ranked No. 103, by a score of 6-2, 6-3 to help lead the Cavaliers to a 4-3 win over Boston College over the weekend. It was the opening match of the season and only matchup of ACC foes on the weekend.
The junior Cavalier played most of the 2015-16 season at No. 5 and No. 6 singles before moving into the top spot in the lineup this season.
Virginia returns to action this weekend, hosting No. 19 LSU, Ole Miss and Wake Forest in the ITA Kickoff Weekend event. The Cavaliers will face Ole Miss at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday at the Boar’s Head Sports Club, while LSU and Wake Forest will play each other at 10 a.m. The winners of each match will face off on Sunday with a berth at the ITA National Team Indoors on the line.
