Women's Tennis Sweeps West Virginia and Virginia Tech

BLACKSBURG, Va. - The ninth-ranked Virginia women's tennis team remained unbeaten on the season by sweeping a pair of matches Tuesday in Blacksburg. The Cavaliers topped West Virginia 7-0 in the first match of the day before blanking No. 60 Virginia Tech 7-0 in their ACC opener in the second match of the doubleheader. The Cavaliers improved to 4-0 (1-0 ACC) with the victories.

The Cavaliers didn't drop a set on the day to post the shutout wins. In singles, Lindsey Hardenbergh (Fairfax Station, Va.), Li Xi (Kunming, China), Erin Vierra (Norwell, Mass.), Maria Fuccillo (Rockville, Md.) and Molly O'Koniewski (Hilton Head Island, S.C.) each posted a pair of singles wins on the day. Hana Tomljanovic (Boca Raton. Fla.) added a win against the Mountaineers and Emily Fraser (Rye, N.Y.) had a win against the Hokies.

The doubles pairs of Tomljanovic/Vierra and Hardenbergh/Fuccillo both had wins in the two matches. Fraser teamed with O'Koniewski for a doubles win against West Virginia and with Xi for a win against Virginia Tech.

Virginia will return to action on Sunday as it visits Boston College. Match time in Chestnut Hill is 10 a.m. The Cavaliers open their home schedule on Feb. 10 as play begins at the 2012 ITA National Team Indoor Championships at the Boar's Head Sports Club.
