It’s the first of two matches against Big 10 foes for the Cavaliers this week who will continue play on the road at No. 9 Michigan on Friday afternoon.

Virginia is coming off a 4-3 win over No. 48 Virginia Tech over the weekend as the Cavaliers improved to 3-0 in Atlantic Coast Conference play. The Cavaliers have wins in ACC play over the Hokies, Boston College and Syracuse. Virginia has also won three consecutive matches on the seasons.

Leading the way for the Cavaliers are a pair of players ranked in the latest ITA women’s singles rankings with junior Cassie Mercer (Huntington, W.V.) at No. 75 and freshman Rosie Johanson at No. 94. Virginia also has a nationally-ranked doubles team with the pairing of Mercer and freshman Chloe Gullickson (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.) ranked No. 43 in the ITA women’s doubles rankings.

Ohio State enters the contest coming off a 4-1 win over No. 35 Arizona State and has won six consecutive matches since falling to North Carolina on the final day of action at the ITA National Team Indoor Championship.

The Buckeyes have five players ranked nationally in the ITA women’s singles rankings, including the top-ranked player in the nation in Francesca Di Lorenzo. Also ranked for Ohio State are Gabrielle De Santis at No. 41, Miho Kowase at No. 53, Sandy Niehaus at No. 54 and Anna Sanford at No. 61.

Ohio State also features four nationally-ranked doubles pairings, including two in the top 40. The duo of Di Lorenzo and Kowase is ranked No. 10, while the pairing of De Santis and Niehaus is ranked No. 31.

Virginia leads the all-time series with Ohio State 4-3. The last time the two teams met was in February of 2011, when the Cavaliers won 4-1 in a contest played in Montgomery, Ala.
