CLEMSON, S.C. The No. 20 Virginia women’s tennis team suffered its second loss of its weekend road trip, falling to No. 13 Clemson 6-1. The Cavaliers fall to 10-4 overall and 3-2 in the ACC.
In doubles play, the Tigers swept all three matches. No. 48 Jennifer Stevens (Miami, Fla.) and Emily Fraser (Rye, N.Y.) took the nation’s No. 8 team, Ani Mijacika and Keri Wong to a tiebreaker at No. 1 doubles, but came up short. In singles, the Cavaliers got a win from Stevens at No. 3, defeating Estefania Balda 6-1, 6-4. However, Clemson recorded straight set wins at the other five positions.
“We are very, very impressed with Clemson,” said Virginia head coach Mark Guilbeau. “We have not faced a team playing at that level on every court of singles and doubles all year. We have made some positive adjustments previously during this season and will need to do so at a high level if we intend to compete with teams this strong. We can and will and will improve as we move forward.”
Virginia returns home next weekend to host a pair of ACC matches. The Cavaliers host Florida State on Friday and Miami on Sunday.
