Guilbeau and Elbaba Earn ITA Atlantic Region Awards

Mark Guilbeau was named Wilson/ITA Atlantic Region Coach of the Year.

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Virginia women's tennis head coach Mark Guilbeau and freshman standout Julia Elbaba (Oyster Bay, N.Y.) received ITA Atlantic Region awards, the organization announced this week.

Guilbeau was named Wilson/ITA Atlantic Region Coach of the Year, while Elbaba earned the Atlantic Region's Rookie of the Year honor.

Guilbeau, who has guided the Cavaliers to three straight NCAA Round of 16 berths, wins his second Atlantic Region Coach of the Year honor. He has guided the Cavaliers to a 19-9 record and school-best fifth consecutive NCAA Tournament this season. Virginia also posted its first victory over a top-ranked team in school history, defeating No. 1 North Carolina, 4-3, in Chapel Hill on March 30.

Elbaba is the first Cavalier to earn Atlantic Region Rookie of the Year accolades. She leads Virginia with a 34-10 singles record, including an 18-8 dual record, and is ranked No. 12 in the nation. Elbaba earned All-ACC and ACC Freshman of the Year honors and will compete as the first seeded UVa women's player in school history at the upcoming NCAA Singles Championship on May 22-27.

Guilbeau and Elbaba are now candidates for ITA National Awards, announced Tuesday, May 21 at the NCAA Men's and Women's Tennis Championships in Urbana, Ill.

No. 14 seed Virginia (19-9) plays No. 3 seed Texas A&M (23-3) in the round of 16 at the 2013 NCAA Women's Tennis Championship on Friday, May 17. First serve at the Khan Outdoor Tennis Complex at the Atkins Tennis Center on the campus of the University of Illinois is set for 5 p.m. ET.
