Collins, Elbaba Compete In U.S. Open Qualifying, Connecticut Open

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. –  Danielle Collins and Julia Elbaba, a pair of standout players in the history of the Virginia women’s tennis program, competed recently with goals of reaching the big stage as the eyes of the tennis world turned toward the final Grand Slam of the season, the U.S. Open.

Collins hit the hard court in the qualifying rounds of the U.S. Open in Flushing, N.Y., while Elbaba competed in the Connecticut Open in New Haven, Ct., this past week.

Collins, a two-time NCAA singles champion and three-time All-America selection during her career at Virginia from 2014-16, faced-off against Katie Boulter of Great Britain in the opening round of qualifying play. In a tight contest early, Collins fell to Boulter who has won a pair of ITF tour singles titles, by a score of 6-4, 6-0. Collins has won a pair of ITF singles titles in her professional career.

Elbaba, the only four-time All-American selection in Virginia women’s tennis history and also an All-America selection in doubles, faced off against Kurumi Nara of Japan in the opening round of the Connecticut Open. Elbaba fell to Nara, who was claimed a singles title on the WTA tour and five singles titles in the ITF tour, by a score of 6-2, 6-2. Elbaba competed for the Cavaliers from 2013-16.
