CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Members of the Virginia women’s tennis team begin competition at the ITA Atlantic Regional on Friday morning with qualifying rounds for the event. This year’s event is hosted by Virginia Tech at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center.
Junior Erica Susi (Vero Beach, Fla.) will open play for the Cavaliers with a 10 a.m. match against Natalie Sayer of Radford. The winner will advance to a 1 p.m. match against the winner of Friday morning’s match between Victoria Okuyama of William & Mary and Sydney Goodson of Georgetown.
The eight players who win two matches on Friday will advance to the main draw of singles which begins on Saturday. The Cavaliers have six players in the main draw, including five seeded players. Competing in the main draw for Virginia are top-seeded Rosie Johanson (Abbotsford, British Columbia), fourth-seeded Cassie Mercer (Huntington, W.V.), fifth-seeded Meghan Kelley (Falmouth, Maine), 13th-seeded Teodora Radosavljevic (Belgrade, Serbia), 15th-seeded Chloe Gullickson (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.) and Camille Favero (Sacramento, Calif.).
The main draw for doubles also begins on Friday afternoon, but all three doubles teams from Virginia received byes and will being play on Saturday. Competing in doubles for the Cavaliers are the pairings of Johanson and Kelley (No. 1 seed in doubles), Radosavljevic and Mercer (No. 5 seed in doubles), and the duo of Favero and Gullickson (No. 8 seed in doubles).
The event winners in singles and doubles advance to the Oracle ITA National Fall Championships. The 2017 Oracle ITA National Fall Championships, which serves as the concluding event to the fall portion of the college tennis schedule, is the only intercollegiate event to feature competitors from all five divisions competing for a national championship.
Through a combination of on-court competition and at-large berths and wild cards, there are several ways for student-athletes to qualify for the 2017 Oracle ITA National Fall Championships, which will be held November 1-5, at the JW Marriott Desert Springs Resort & Spa in Palm Desert, Calif., and the Indian Wells Tennis Garden in Indian Wells, Calif.
