PHILADELPHIA -- Four members of the Virginia women's tennis team advanced to the Round of 16 of the ITA East Regional as play continued Sunday at the University of Pennsylvania. The Cavaliers also had a doubles team advance to the quarterfinals at the event.
Junior Jennifer Stevens (Miami, Fla.), the No. 5 seed, advanced to the round of 16 with a pair of wins Sunday. In the round of 64 she topped Lauren Sabacinski of William & Mary when Sabacinski had to retire at 1-1 in the first set due to injury. She followed that win with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Denise Harijanto of Buffalo in the round of 32.
First-year Emily Fraser (Rye, N.Y.), the No. 9 seed, opened play Sunday with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Martha Blakely of Virginia Tech in the round of 64. In her second match, she defeated Laura Peterzan of Harvard 6-3, 6-3.
Senior Amanda Rales (Bethesda, Md.), the No. 12 seed, topped Kate Donelly of Sacred Heart 6-1, 6-0 in the round of 64 before posting a 6-4, 6-4 win over Vicky Brook of Yale in the round of 32.
First-year Lindsey Hardenbergh (Fairfax Station, Va.), a 17-32 seed, topped Katarina Gajic of Boston College 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 in the round of 64. She followed that win with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over No. 13 seed Charleen Haarhoff of Old Dominion in the round of 32.
Senior Maggie Yahner (Las Vegas, Nev.) had her run at the tournament come to an end with a 6-2, 6-4 loss to Nadine Fahoum of Old Dominion in the round of 64.
In doubles, the team of Stevens and Fraser topped the team of Amir and Miller of Maryland 9-7 in the round of 16 to advance to the quarterfinals. The team of Rales and Hardenbergh fell in the round of 16 to No. 2 seed Zoricic amd Archarya of William & Mary 8-3.
The tournament continues Monday at Penn.
