Cavaliers Open Play at Hokie Fall Invitational

BLACKSBURG, Va. -- The Virginia women's tennis team sent several players to the 15th annual Hokie Fall Invitational at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center. All four Cavalier singles players won on the opening day while Virginia won three of four doubles matches.

In singles Flight A, Virginia had a pair of players advance to the quarterfinals. Emily Fraser (Rye, N.Y.) topped Alsion Rauh of Davidson 6-1, 6-0 and Lindsey Hardenbergh (Fairfax Station, Va.) downed Isabell Raich of Marshall 6-2, 6-0. Neela Vaez (Perrysburg, Ohio) opened play in Flight B with a 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 win over Brooke Walter of East Carolina. In Flight C, Maggie Yahner (Las Vegas, Nev.) defeated Vita Moskailova of East Tennessee State 7-5, 6-1 in the first round.

In Flight A of doubles, the team of Fraser and Yahner advanced to the semifinals with a pair of wins Friday. They topped Fanney and McDevitt of Davidson 9-8 (6) in the opening round before downing Dajevic and Drobnjak of Radford 8-4 in the quarterfinals. The team of Hardenbergh and Vaez won an opening round match over Hangstefer and Singh of Chattanooga 8-5, but fell in quarterfinals 8-6 to Jaime and Stupek of East Tennessee State.

The tournament continues Saturday and runs through Sunday.
