Three Women's Tennis Players Receive Fall ITA Rankings

PRINCETON, N.J. - The University of Virginia women's tennis team is ranked 54th in the nation in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Fall Rankings, which were recently released. The Cavaliers' top doubles team of third years Leslie Cook (Boynton Beach, Fla./Lake Worth Christian) and Christie Schweer (Houston, Texas/Memorial) have been ranked nationally, while second year Amy O'Donnell (Mahwah, N.J./Mahwah) is ranked regionally in singles.

Virginia is ranked 54th in the nation as a team and sixth in the East Region in the ITA Fall Rankings. UVa concluded the 1998-99 season ranked 48th in the country and fifth in the East Region. In the 1999 ITA Fall East Region poll, Virginia is ranked behind, William & Mary, Virginia Commonwealth, Maryland, Princeton and Harvard.

Cook and Schweer are ranked 49th nationally in doubles, down one spot from the ranking of 48th in the 1999 ITA Preseason poll. During the fall of 1999, Cook and Schweer posted a 6-4 doubles record.

O'Donnell is the 19th ranked singles player in the East Region. During the fall of 1999, she registered an 8-4 record and was the Wolfpack Invitational Flight A Singles Champion and the Brown Invitational Flight C Doubles Champion along with third year Jana Liskovcova (South Easton, Mass./Mansfield).

The 1999 fall season mainly focused on individual competition, but Virginia did finish second at the ECAC Team Tournament, held October 15-17, in New Jersey, with a 3-1 record. The Cavaliers open the 2000 spring season January 21-24 at the ACC Indoor Championships in Chapel Hill, N.C.
