First-year Sarah Kirkwood had 18 kills and 10 digs in UVa's 3-2 loss to Florida State
Nov. 5, 2004
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The Virginia volleyball team held a 2-1 games lead, but Florida State rallied to win the final two games for a 3-2 (25-30, 30-27, 23-30, 30-27, 15-12) victory over the Cavaliers in Atlantic Coast Conference volleyball action Friday evening (November 5) at Tully Gym. The loss snaps UVa's four-match winning streak as Virginia falls to 17-8 overall and 7-6 in the ACC. The Seminoles improve to 16-9 overall and 7-6 in the conference.
The five-game loss was the first such setback for the Cavaliers this season. UVa had won its previous three five-game matches this season. The Seminoles also handed Virginia its last five-game loss as Florida State came back to win the last two games in the final match of the 2003 regular season in Tallahassee on November 16.
Virginia had a season-high four players record double-doubles in the match. First-year outside hitter Sarah Kirkwood (Tampa, Fla./Plant) tied for match-high honors in kills with 18 and also tallied 10 digs for a double-double. Fourth-year middle Alexis Geocaris (Wilmette, Ill./New Trier) and second-year outside hitter Lindsay Osco (Houston, Texas/Elkins) both posted 14 kills in the match. Geocaris rounded out her double-double with a match-best 10 blocks and also led all players with four service aces. Osco recorded her team-leading 14th double-double of the season with 14 digs to go along with her 14 kills. Second-year setter Emily Kirkwood (Tampa, Fla./Plant) recorded 49 assists and 12 digs to round out UVa's double-doubles.
Third-year outside hitter Kristin Chaney (Johnston, Iowa/Johnston) and second-year middle Stephanie Everett (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore) both nearly recorded double-doubles as well. Chaney had 15 digs and Everett registered 11 kills while both players had nine blocks. First-year libero Melissa Caldwell (Houston, Texas/Stratford) led the Cavaliers in defensive saves as she totaled 21 digs.
Kristen Rust led the Seminoles with 18 kills and 18 digs, while Amanda Santos tallied 17 kills and a .406 hitting percentage. Andreza Santos had 15 kills and a team-high five blocks, while Nikki Anthony added 14 kills. Setter Jessica Skower also notched a double-double as she handed out a match-high 63 assists to go along with 10 digs. Summer Weissing led all players with 26 digs.
The Cavaliers hit .168 in the match with 61 kills, while Florida State hit .195 with 79 kills. The Seminoles also held a 97-77 advantage in digs. The Cavaliers fell one team block shy of the school record for blocks in a game with 20. FSU had 10 blocks in the match. UVa set the single match record with 21 team blocks against Cincinnati earlier this season. The Cavaliers also held a 10-4 edge in service aces.
Virginia returns to action on Sunday, November 7 when it travels to Coral Gables, Fla., for a 1:00 p.m. match against Miami.
