CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.—In a match that saw the first three sets need extra points, the Virginia volleyball team defeated Miami, 28-26, 25-27, 30-28 and 25-15, Saturday night (Nov. 9) at Memorial Gymnasium. The Cavaliers, who have won five out of their last six matches, improved to 15-11 (8-6 ACC) on the season, while the Hurricanes fell to 15-9 (8-6 ACC).
“I thought our kids played tough tonight and hung in there at points we were down, which is key when you play a team like Miami, who is very athletic and do some really nice things (on the court),” UVa head coach Dennis Hohenshelt said. “I thought we served tough and as the game progressed, we got into an offensive rhythm. Lauren (Fuller) was outstanding for us again and I thought our back-row players all played well.”
“It was like a marathon,” junior Tori Janowski said. “All of those extra points really get your adrenaline running and it was very tense, but we were able to stay focused. The crowd was really loud tonight and that always helps us because we feed off of their energy.”
Virginia outhit Miami, .193-.150 and led in service aces, 6-3, while the Hurricanes held a 13-10.5 advantage in blocking.
UVa freshman Jasmine Burton (White Hills, Calif.) led the Cavaliers with a season-high 22 kills on .300 hitting, while junior Tori Janowski (Sterling, Va.) added a double-double with 17 kills and 10 digs. Fellow Junior Morgan Blair (Long Valley, N.J.) tallied a match-high seven blocks.
Freshman Lexi Riccolo (Wheaton, Ill.) recorded a season-high 21 digs, while senior Emily Rottman (Santa Barbara, Calif.) and sophomore Lauren Fuller (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) also added 21 digs each. Fuller recorded a double-double, also dishing out 55 assists.
In the first set, the Cavaliers had three set points before finally winning the set on the fourth, 28-26, after two Hurricane errors.
UVa fought off two set points in the second set, but Miami claimed the frame, 27-25, after a kill by Misty Ma’A and a block by Ma’A and Alexis Mourning.
The third set saw both teams fight off set points, but a Miami hitting error followed by a stuff block from Burton and Blair clinched the set for UVa, 30-28.
In the fourth set, Miami closed the Cavaliers lead to one at 13-12, but UVa went on a 12-3 run to close out the match, 25-15.
Ma’A and Savanah Leaf led Miami with 13 kills each.
Up next, the Cavaliers travel to NC State and North Carolina next weekend (Nov. 15-16).
