Cavaliers 2-0 at Mid-Point of Jefferson Cup

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Shannon Whalers (Phoenix, Ariz./Independence) had 10 kills to lead a balanced attack as Virginia defeated Liberty 3-0 to collect their second win of the day at the 1997 Jefferson Cup Tournament. Earlier in the day, the Virginia downed Delaware 3-0 as Jessica Parsons (Green Oaks, Ill./Libertyville) finished with 13 kills to pace the Cavaliers. UVa, along with Big Ten representative Illinois, finished the day's play with perfect 2-0 records.

In UVa's first game, Claire Folga (Atlanta, Ga./Marist Academy) and Andrea Fisher (Santa Barbara, Calif./Santa Barbara) each notched nine kills and Mary Frances Scott (Phoenix, Ariz./Xavier College Prep) had 34 assists as the Cavaliers easily defeated Delaware. Shannon Wahlers had 12 digs for Virginia. Virginia hit and impressive 362-percent (.362) in the afternoon game as they registered 45 kills against just 11 errors in 94 attempts. The Cavaliers finished the match with 10 service aces, including six from Wahlers.

In the evening's final match, Virginia rallied from a six point deficit to steal the third game from the Liberty 15-13. Wahlers finished with 10 after entering the game for the injured Tamara Shulman (Dallas, Texas/Lake highlands). Amy Mitchell (Amarillo, Texas/Tascosa) helped pick up the slack by registering eight kills, while Folga and Parsons each had seven kills. Scott led Virginia with 32 assists.

In other Jefferson Cup action...
Mary Coleman had 11 kills as Illinois defeated Delaware. Paige Harrison had 15 assists for the Blue Hens...Jelena Mirkovic had 15 kills and Amy Bambenek had 14 as Coastal Carolina held off a tough Liberty squad. Three Flames had more than 10 kills, including Anthonia Akpama's 14...Kristy Chapman had a team-high 11 kills as Illinois downed Coastal Carolina in three games. Emma Prowse had 11 kills and Michelle Sheperd had 15 assists for the Chanticleers.
