Virginia Rebounds to Skip Past Villanova in Five Games

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Jessica Parsons (Green Oaks, Ill./Libertyville) had 16 kills as Virginia bounced back from a three point deficit in the deciding fifth game to defeat Villanova in the first round of the inaugural Virginia Invitational. Earlier in the day, Iowa State defeated Northeastern, 3-0.

Virginia trailed 8-5 in the decisive fifth game but came storming back behind the solid play of Deanna Zwarich (Overland Park, Kan./Shawnee Mission North). Nagging injuries had kept Zwarich from playing in the match's first four games, but when summoned by Virginia head coach Melissa Aldrich Shelton, Zwarich answered the call. She totaled five kills in just six attempts, including the point that gave the Cavaliers the lead and the final point of the match.

Other key contributors for UVa were Mary Frances Scott (Phoenix, Ariz./Xavier College Prep) and Claire Folga (Atlanta, Ga./Marist Academy). Scott finished with 57 assists and 20 digs, while Folga chipped in with 15 kills, six digs, and three blocks. Shannon Wahlers (Phoenix, Ariz./Independence) and Andrea Fischer (Santa Barbara, Calif./Santa Barbara) helped the Cavalier cause with 11 and 10 kills, respectively.

Megan O'Brien helped Villanova recover from a two games to none deficit with 21 kills, while Stacey Moline tabbed 55 assists for the Wildcats.
