Virginia Stops Northeastern and Iowa State to Claim Tournament Crown

Charlottesville, Va. - Amy Mitchell (Amarillo, Texas/Tascosa) had 19 kills and nine digs to lead Virginia to a 3-1 win over Iowa State in the final game of the inaugural Virginia Invitational, played at Memorial Gymnasium. The win completed a weekend sweep for the Cavaliers. UVa also defeated Villanova and Northeastern to finish the round-robin format with a perfect 3-0 record.

Claire Folga (Atlanta, Ga./Marist Academy) contributed 14 kills and 11 digs after sitting out the afternoon win over Northeastern with an undisclosed injury. Mary Frances Scott chipped in with 48 kills as Virginia won its fifth consecutive match. Invitational MVP Jessica Parsons (Green Oaks, Ill./Libertyville) finished with eight kills.

Colleen Henican led Iowa State (9-4) with 24 kills, while Julie McGrath had 32 assists for the Cyclones.

In Virginia's first match of the day, Mitchell tallied 15 kills, while Scott had 50 assists to lead UVa to a 3-1 win over Northeastern. Andrea Fischer (Santa Barbara, Calif./Santa Barbara) had 13 kills for the Cavaliers, while Deanna Zwarich (Overland park, Kan./Shawnee Mission North) and Parsons had 11 and 10 kills, respectively, to help Virginia run its winning streak to four. Jessica Knott had 13 kills to lead Northeastern (5-8).
