Virginia (4-2) went 1-2 at the Pepperdine Invitational in Malibu, Calif., last weekend (Sept. 6-7). The Cavaliers fell to Colorado State (3-1) and host Pepperdine (3-1), before coming from behind to defeat UC Santa Barbara, 3-2.
Freshman Haley Kole (Tallahassee, Fla.) was named ACC Freshman of the Week as well being honored on the Pepperdine Invitational All-Tournament Team. It is the first time Virginia has had back-to-back ACC Freshman of the Week honors, as first-year Jasmine Burton (White Hills, Calif.) was recognized last week.
The Hilltoppers (5-3) are hitting .273 as a team and have four players averaging over two kills per set. WKU has won both meetings between the schools, including a 3-1 win last year in Charlottesville.
The Rebels (3-3) are led by Sekola Falemake, who averages 3.67 kills per set. The two schools have only faced off twice, with each school winning once. UNLV swept the last meeting in 2007.
The Bobcats (5-1) have five players that average two or more kills per set, led by Kelly Lamberti, who averages 3.30 kps. Virginia leads the all-time series, 2-1, and claimed the last meeting, 3-1, at Ohio in 2011.
Up next, the Cavaliers host the Cavalier Classic Sept. 20-21 against Seton Hall, Columbia and William & Mary at Memorial Gymnasium.
