GREENSBORO, N.C.--Virginia volleyball's Jasmine Burton has been named Atlantic Coast Conference Volleyball Freshman of the Year, the conference announced Wednesday (Dec. 4). Three other Cavaliers, including junior Tori Janowski, sophomore Lauren Fuller and freshman Haley Kole, earned All-ACC honors.
Burton is UVa's first conference Freshman of the Year since MacKenzie Adams in 2010 and the Cavaliers have two members on the ACC All-Freshman team for the first time since 1997 (Andrea Fischer and Deanna Zwarich). The Cavaliers have a member on the first, second or third team for the first time since 2009 (Simone Asque - First Team) and two honorees for the first time since 2006, when they had three student-athletes recognized.
Fuller (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) was named to the All-ACC Second Team, while Janowski (Sterling, Va.) and Burton (White Hills, Calif.) earned third-team honors. Burton and Kole (Tallahassee, Fla.) were recognized on the ACC All-Freshman squad.
As a right-side hitter, Burton was third on the Cavalier team with 380 kills, 2.97 kills per set, 73 blocks and a .259 hitting percentage. The kills and kills per set marks rank fifth on UVa's freshman record list, while the hitting percentage is the seventh-best mark. Her 68 block assists rank as the eighth-most on Virginia's freshman list.
Fuller dished out 1,455 assists in her first season in Charlottesville after transferring from Arizona following her freshman season. The setter's 1,455 assists rank as the sixth-most in Virginia single-season history. Fuller averaged 11.37 assists per set, which is the eighth-best mark on the Cavalier single-season list and was second most in the ACC this year.
Janowski returned to outside hitter a year after being the team's setter in 2012 and notched a team-high 462 kills, 3.61 kills per set and 46 service aces (0.36). Her aces ranked third in the conference this year and her 3.61 kills per set ranks fourth on UVa's single-season charts. The tally of 462 kills is eighth most in Cavalier history.
Kole, an outside hitter, was second on the team with 430 kills and 3.39 kills per set. The mark of 430 kills is the second-most tally in UVa freshman history and the 10th most in UVa single-season lore. Her average of 3.39 kills per set ranks fifth on UVa's freshman list.
The Cavaliers finished the 2013 season with a record of 18-14, doubling their win total from 2012 (9-22). Virginia placed in a tie for fifth place in the ACC with a record of 11-9 in conference matches after going 3-17 the previous season.
